Set Steel Wire Mesh Fence

The appropriate method for setting steel fence posts into the ground varies, depending upon the type of post and the purpose of your fence. Dig a hole in the ground at the first post location with a clamshell posthole digger. Sprinkle 1 to 2 inches of loose gravel in the base of the post hole. Insert the base of the steel fence post into the post hole. Temporary steel posts like T-posts are thin and lightweight, so you can drive them into the ground manually rather than having to dig a posthole. As a rule, the width of the posthole should be three to four times the diameter of the post and the hole should be deep enough to contain 1/3 of the post's height. Stand the post upright and rest a level on the side of the post to verify that the post is straight in the hole; shift the post to straighten it, if necessary. Have a helper hold the post in place. Permanent steel posts such as those commonly used with chain link fences have thicker diameters and usually can't be pounded straight into the ground, so they require tamped gravel and soil to hold them in place. For example, if you're setting 2-inch-diameter steel posts that measure 6 feet long, then the posthole should be approximately 6 to 8 inches wide and 2 feet deep.
